Water Clarity and Lower Flows on the Upper Kern are Producing Great Fishing Results! Upper Kern River Upper Kern River: Fantastic conditions and fishing have returned, post hurricane as expected. Fish were being caught by Wednesday and the river was back to normal flows and solid fishing by the weekend. Flows are currently at 700cfs in section 5 and 1,170 above Fairview Dam with temps staying around 62°. The caddis hatch has been very spotty since the hurricane. A couple of rising fish here and there, but no significant surface activity. We still have a dry fly rod rigged with a #14 Elk Hair Caddis to target any rising fish we see through the day. Flav (Little Green Drake) and Yellow Quill mayflies are hatching late afternoon. There's not much surface activity on these but fishing a #14 Royal Wulff or #14-16 Para Adams might get some action. Fish nymphs like the Peacock Frenchie, Tungsten Jig Red But, Slim Shiny Perdigon and Flashback Hare's Ear along the edges to imitate the naturals. Even though stoneflies are not hatching, they are catching a good percentage of the fish .lately. #8-12 Red Squirrel Nymphs, Yellow Sally Nymphs, Bucky Stones, Jig Hares Ears and Kauffie Cup Stones are all solid on the 20 mile stretch. Make sure to have some Pat's Rubber Legs (olive-brown) if going above the bridge! All techniques are currently working, but we've been concentrating on bobber and dry-dropper setups to cover the most water quickly. The #6 Red Fuzzy Wuzzy was best as a foamy dry on the dry-dropper rig, drawing a few rises through the week. Same nymphs as above on the dry/dropper but just don't got too big or it will sink your dry. Toss White and Shad Finesse Gamechangers and Bugger Changers on a sink tip for an occasional aggressive streamer strike. Kern Tips: Carry an extra rod rigged with an Elk Hair Caddis for the occasional rising fish. California Creekin' Creeks: A good amount of fresh water was added to the creeks from the hurricane which actually stunted the bite for a couple days, then they turned on again over the weekend. No changes here as we continue to fish a #14-16 Elk Hair Caddis, Elk Hair Skaddis or Para-Adams for plenty of action! Get our Hi-Viz Blue Wings or Use Royal Wulffs for better visibilty! You still need stealth, good technique and polarized glasses to maximize your opportunities on these amazing waters. Dry/dropper was good mid week with higher water, but we're back to mostly single dries now. A #18 Hares Ears, Walt Worms, Slim Shiny Orange or Soft Hackle PT will work if you need to get dirty. South Fork: (See the 4x4 Guide Trips) Excellent conditions and flows around 100cfs have returned to the Kennedy Meadows area. The dry-dropper set up or prospecting with a single dry are the way to go again as flows are back to ideal. We like the Red Fuzzy Wuzzy, Cicadacator or Hoppincator for supporting a tungsten nymph in the dry/dropper set up. Flashy nymphs are usually best as water clears up here too! The Slim Shinies, Fire Perdigons and Lightning Bugs #14-18 are winners. Frenchies and Hare's Ear's are always good too. Go with #10-16 Rubber Leg Stimulators, Royal Wulffs and Elk Hair Caddis for prospecting with a single dry. Kern River Flows: 1072 cfs Kern River Water temp: 62 degrees Lower Kern River - Lower Kern River is blown out! Flows: 3184 cfs The Lower Kern continues to be released at very high flows. Be safe and stay out as the river is powerful and has strong undercurrents! Lower Kern Flows outside the Kern Canyon Crowley Lake Crowley Lake: Mcgee Bay continues to be the most consistent area on the lake. The midge hatch is still light so we are fishing larvae patterns deep with a damsel, mayfly or perch pattern above. The Blue Blood Midge is always good to start the day with then go to Olive Zebras and Copper Tigers if others are catching and you are not. A #14 Hares Ear will cover both the Callibaetis nymphs and perch fry as as your top fly. Twitch or even slow strip for best results. We'll be scouting the North Arm and Green Banks area this week, so stay tuned for an update next week as we transition towards fall conditions. Wooly Buggers, Beldar Buggers, leeches and Game Changers are getting bit with next seasons smaller hatchery fish being planted recently. Our 19ft center console provides the perfect platform to fish the lake from for parties up to 3 or small families of 4! Crowley Lake Tip: Get on or adjacent to the old creek channel in Mcgee Bay for the best action!! from about 7:30-8:30am and we've been able to trick a few with Elk Hair Caddis and Elk Hair Skaddis flies Changing techniques and/or flies through the day will provide a higher bite rate. A great way to overcome that is by fishing two dry flies, or a "double-dry" rig. When fishing smoother slicks, separate the two flies by 24-36", by tying a smaller "match the hatch" In stronger, more conflicting currents, it's often better to fish the two flies closer (8-12") to each
