  • Kern River Fishing Report - Kern River / Lake Isabella / Lake Crowley/Sequoia Creeks 10-31-23

Dry Fly Action Continues with Hatches Coming Off Later in the Day on the Upper Kern Upper Kern River Upper Kern River: A few nights of colder temps in the high 30's in town and single digits in the backcountry dropped water temps to 46° in town and we had a few days of tough fishing through Saturday morning. Daytime temps bumped back up on Sunday and the hatches and hot bite came with it!! Go now!!! We expect solid fishing all week with daytime temps in the upper 70's. Flows are currently 447cfs above Fairview Dam, 84cfs in section 5, and 516cfs in town with clear, 44-48° water. The hatches slowed during the cold snap but were back on Sunday with Slate Wing Olives, Glossosoma Caddis, Blue Winged Olives, Yellow Quills, Micro caddis and more!!! Target rising fish from 10:00am through the evening. The fish will often rise in short flurries, so be patient during the lulls and be ready when they start popping on the surface! Para-Adams #14-20, Elk Hair Caddis (peacock or black)#14-18, Hi Viz BWO, Cripple Mayflies, Extended Body BWO, and Sparkle Adams #12-16 are getting bit. Rubber Leg Stimulators #10-12, Royal Wulffs #10-14, Elk Hair Caddis #14-18, Para Adams, Sparkle Adams #12-18 and Red or Orange Fuzzy Wuzzies are good attractor dries to fish solo, dry-dropper or dry-dry.. The Red Fuzzy is back and getting topwater bites daily in the dry-dropper set up!! Walt's Worm #18 was hands down back to top nymph on Saturday and Sunday. Frenchies are getting some too along with Red and Blue Copper Nymphs, Flashback P.T.'s, Soft Hackle Copper Nymphs, Tungsten Jig Hot Tag PT and Tung Jig Black Perdigons. Stoneflies are always a good bet especially as water temps drop into fall. #8-12 Pat's Rubber Legs, Red Squirrel Nymphs, Yellow Sally Nymphs, Bucky Stones, Jig Hares Ears and Kauffie Cup Stones are day to day on the 20 mile stretch. Lots of hatchery fish in the system, so make sure to have pink if fishing in town or the campgrounds. Pink Frenchies, Kern Candy, Naughty Bunnies, etc. Hot Head Slim Shinies White and Blue are good too! Kern Tips: Fish a Double-Dry setup when targeting rising fish. A #12 Rubber Legged Stimulator helps locate the smaller Elk Hair Caddis or Para Adams that will trail off the bend of the hook by 8-12". And they occasionally grab the stimi! The Allegranza's took part in the Fly Tying Class taught by the Buhler Brothers on Saturday. California Creekin' Creeks: The creeks are finally slowing down, especially at elevations above 6,000ft., with colder nights and water temps. Make sure to plan for some afternoon fishing from 12-4 for best results up high. Lower elevation creeks are still producing some fun dry fly action through most of the day. We continue to fish a #14-16 Elk Hair Caddis, Elk Hair Skaddis or Para-Adams for plenty of action! Get our Hi-Viz Blue Wings or Use Royal Wulffs for better visibilty! For nymphs, use a #18 Slim Shiny, Pheasant Tail or Hares Ear. South Fork: Should be good all week with warm temps predicted. The dry-dropper set up or prospecting with a single dry are the way to go, as flows are still ideal at about 75cfs. Go with #10-16 Rubber Leg Stimulators, Royal Wulffs and Elk Hair Caddis for prospecting with a single dry. The Streambank Hopper and Red Fuzzies are good for supporting a tungsten nymph in the dry/dropper set up and are still getting smashed occasionally by bigger fish. The Walt's Worm, Flashback PT's, Hot Head Shinies and Hares Ears or Red Squirrel Nymphs are always good dropper options. The Guy Jeans Podcast is on Spotify, iTunes and Waypoint TV Episode # 85 Cream with Malcom Bruce 10/30/23 Quarto Valley Records proudly announces the new album “Heavenly Cream: An Acoustic Tribute to Cream.” The album takes us on a magical journey -- traveling the brief course of the iconic band’s musical life -- back to the raw, stripped-down magic of the creativity of Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, and Pete Brown. Passionately produced and mixed by Rob Cass, the new album will be released via Quarto Valley Records on November 3rd on vinyl, CD and digitally on all platforms. Malcolm Bruce, Jack’s son, who, as a musician of note, was involved in the making of the album. Formed in 1966, CREAM quickly became known for their explosive impromptu style – high-volume blues jamming, extended solos and flashy instrumental showmanship. The project honors CREAM’s legacy with a 15-track tribute album and features Pete Brown and Ginger Baker plus an impressive roster of renowned musicians who knew, or were inspired by the iconic supergroup including Joe Bonamassa, Deborah Bonham, Malcolm Bruce, Peter Bullick, Nathan James, Bernie Marsden, Maggie Bell, Rob Cass, Clem Clempson, Paul Rodgers and Bobby Rush. There were also invaluable musical contributions from Cheryl Alleyne, Winston Blissett, Moreno Buttinar, Abass Dodoo, John Donaldson, Pee Wee Ellis, Mo Foster, Neil Murray, Mo Nazam, Tony Remy, and Frank Tontoh. The first single off the album, “Sunshine of Your Love,” was released on September 1 and features Ginger Baker on drums, Joe Bonamassa on vocals and guitar, Malcom Bruce on piano and the late Bernie Marsden on vocals and guitar, with Neil Murray on bass and Abass Dodoo on percussion. This iconic song, co-written by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown was included on Cream’s best-selling second album Disraeli Gears in November 1967 and became one of Cream’s fan favorites. “Heavenly Cream: An Acoustic Tribute to Cream” was recorded at Sensible Music and the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. Years in the making, Quarto Valley Records’ executive Mike Carden initially approached Pete Brown, his long-time colleague and friend, in 2017 about a different project and out of that meeting came the concept of doing a recording -- a retrospective of CREAM music -- which both Pete and Mike mutually agreed to. Pete had remained friends with Ginger Baker over the years and brought him on board. Following suit came Malcom Bruce (Jack’s son), and the gathering of the incredible talent on the album began to fall into place. On recording this album, Malcom Bruce said, “I feel very much that in my own small way I’m carrying on a tradition that’s incredibly unique in the musical canon as it were.” ALBUM TRACK LISTING 1.
