4 Reasons You Should Attend The California Fly Fishing Open this October (even if you don't compete)

The California Fly Fishing Open returns to Kernville, CA, on October 12, promising a weekend of excitement for both fly-fishing pros and casual visitors. Whether you're competing or just there for the fun, it’s the perfect chance to enjoy the great outdoors and good vibes! With its friendly yet competitive tournament, fundraising efforts, and family-friendly events, this is a must-attend event for everyone who loves good times with good people.

Aside from the excitement the teams will experience fly fishing throughout the morning, here are 4 great reasons why you should join this year’s tournament—whether you're competing or just there for the fun!

1. There's A Fun Pre-Tourney Poker & Dinner on Friday, October 11th

Kick off the California Fly Fishing Open weekend with a fun and charitable Poker Night on Friday evening at the Kernville Saloon! Starting with a social hour at 6 PM, followed by gaming at 7 PM, the event raises funds for the “Kid’s Academy,” a one-day fishing school for kids led by Southern Sierra Fly Fishers. It’s the perfect way to settle into town, grab some dinner, and enjoy a lively evening of cards, all while supporting a great cause.

2. The California Fly Fishing Open Benefits Not One, But Two Charities!

The main event kicks off early on Saturday, October 12, where teams of five compete for top honors. The proceeds from this year’s tournament will benefit Casting for Recovery SoCal and Kern Valley Search and Rescue, making this not only a fun competition but also a cause-driven one. Participants will have access to designated fishable areas, including the scenic Lake Isabella and sections of the North Fork of the Kern River.

Scoring System: Points are awarded based on fish size, with a bonus for team spirit through banners and shirts.

3. The post-tourney festivities are always a blast! Enjoy dinner, a live concert, raffles, and vendors!

The event is open to both participants and non-tournament guests, with tickets available for dinner and concert entry.

Once the tournament wraps up, head to Rivernook Campground for a fun evening filled with music, food, and games. Festivities include a dinner, raffle giveaways, and a live concert featuring a local band.

  • Fishing Demonstrations & Vendors: Learn from experienced fly-fishing experts, try out new gear, and chat with vendors offering unique outdoor products.

  • Raffles and Games: Enjoy fly-fishing themed games and take part in raffles with fantastic prizes.

Dinner starts at 6 PM, followed by more entertainment, including a special fly rod giveaway during the Heads or Tails game. Don’t miss this lively way to end the day!
